A dog’s transformation is so dramatic that it feels impossible to believe the before and after pictures show the same animal.
That was the case for Sully, a one-year-old terrier who was found wandering the streets of Southern California with an extraordinary burden: three pounds of filthy, matted fur.
The tiny stray could barely see beneath his tangled coat. He had been wandering alone for an unknown amount of time, carrying a heavy mass of fur.
Then someone finally stopped to help.
A Stray In Desperate Need
Sully was picked up by Riverside County Department of Animal Services after an animal control officer gained his trust.
When rescuers saw him, they immediately understood that he needed serious attention.
His coat was dirty, severely matted and so heavy that it had become a burden. The fur even covered his eyes, leaving Sully unable to see properly.
What mattered was that he was finally somewhere safe.
The Grooming That Changed Everything
The shelter team carefully began removing Sully’s tangled coat.
It wasn’t a simple haircut.
They had to shave away the enormous amount of matted fur that had accumulated around his small body.
As the fur came off, Sully’s transformation became obvious.
Underneath all that weight was a sweet, smiling dog.
The three pounds of fur that had once dragged him down were gone.
For Sully, it was more than a dramatic makeover.
It was relief.
A New Beginning
After being cleaned up and receiving the care he needed, Sully was transported across the country to New Jersey.
He traveled as part of a lifesaving relocation effort involving Riverside County Department of Animal Services, Brandywine Valley SPCA and the ASPCA’s Animal Relocation program.
Sully was one of 58 dogs and puppies transported from Southern California to Pennsylvania, giving them opportunities to find homes while helping create space in shelters dealing with overcrowding.
Now Sully is staying at Brandywine Valley SPCA’s Animal Adoption Center in Lindenwold, New Jersey.
And the frightened stray who first arrived has changed dramatically.
Look At Him Now
According to the people caring for Sully, he has shown nothing but happiness and love since arriving.
He is playful, smart and affectionate. He gets energetic zoomies when he runs through the yard, and he is highly motivated by treats.
He already knows basic commands, including “sit,” and he walks nicely on a leash.
Most importantly, Sully enjoys meeting people.
The dog who once looked almost completely hidden beneath his matted coat now has an unmistakable smile.
Waiting For His Person
Sully is still young and energetic, so he needs a family ready to give him plenty of attention, affection and activity.
After everything this little dog endured before anyone found him, his next chapter can be completely different.
No more dragging around pounds of tangled fur.
No more struggling to see through a filthy coat.
No more wandering alone.
Instead, Sully can spend his days playing, learning, exploring and discovering what it feels like to be loved.
His transformation is remarkable, but perhaps the most beautiful part is what comes next.
The hardest part may be behind him.
Now, this once-overlooked stray is waiting for the person who will look past his past and see the happy, goofy dog underneath.
After carrying three pounds of misery, Sully finally gets to carry something much lighter:
Hope.
