What started as an ordinary walk through the countryside quickly turned into a nightmare for one Golden Retriever puppy and the family who loves him.
Seven-month-old Kobi was enjoying a stroll through long grass with his owners when something unseen changed everything. At first, there were no obvious signs of what had happened.
But later that day, Kobi became unusually quiet.
The normally playful puppy grew lethargic and cried whenever anyone touched him. Concerned, his owners, Roma and Steve Morgan, rushed him to their local veterinarian. Blood tests were performed, and Kobi was given pain relief before being sent home.
Unfortunately, his condition only got worse.
By the middle of the night, Kobi was clearly deteriorating. Then, early the next morning, his neck began to swell dramatically. His owners hurried him back to the veterinary clinic, where doctors initially suspected a blood clot.
Everything changed once they shaved the fur around his neck.
Hidden beneath his thick Golden Retriever coat was a traumatic wound that veterinarians believed had been caused by an adder bite—the only venomous snake native to the United Kingdom.
Kobi received additional treatment, but his family knew something still wasn’t right.
Determined to save him, they sought a second opinion and drove him to another veterinary hospital where antivenom was available. From there, Kobi was transferred to a specialist veterinary team that would oversee the long road to his recovery.
The damage caused by the venom was severe.
By the time Kobi arrived, his neck had suffered extensive swelling, and the toxins had already begun destroying surrounding tissue. Veterinarians explained that movement after a snake bite can spread venom more quickly through the body, increasing the amount of tissue damage.
What followed was months of intensive care.
Over the next 10 months, Kobi underwent five surgeries and an astonishing 90 wound dressing changes as veterinarians worked to remove damaged tissue, prevent infection, and help his body heal.
At one point, his wounds required daily bandage changes.
Despite everything he endured, Kobi amazed everyone caring for him.
Rather than becoming fearful, the sweet puppy remained gentle and trusting throughout his treatment.
His veterinary team said he would patiently stand while they cleaned and bandaged his wounds, often resting his head on the shoulder of the veterinarian who had become one of his favorite people.
It was clear he somehow understood they were trying to help him.
His owners were equally touched by the dedication of the veterinary staff.
They recalled how the lead veterinarian even came in on her days off to change Kobi’s bandages when his condition required constant attention. The family says they’ll never forget the compassion and commitment shown throughout his recovery.
While the treatment was lengthy—and expensive—they never questioned whether it was worth it.
To them, Kobi is family.
After months of surgeries, wound care, and rehabilitation, the day finally came when the energetic Golden Retriever was able to enjoy life again.
Today, Kobi is back to doing everything puppies love most.
He’s running, swimming, playing, and making up for lost time, leaving behind the painful chapter that nearly cost him his life.
His owners now approach walks through long grass with much greater caution, hoping other dog owners will also be aware of the risks posed by venomous snakes in areas where adders live.
Kobi’s incredible journey is a testament to expert veterinary care, unwavering determination, and the extraordinary resilience of one brave puppy.
After ten months of fighting to heal, he’s once again living the happy, carefree life every dog deserves—and his family couldn’t be more grateful to see their little hero smiling again.
