A mother should never have to bring her babies into the world surrounded by fear, neglect, and filth.
Yet that was the heartbreaking reality for a 4-year-old German Shepherd named Foxy.
Heavily pregnant and covered in fleas, Foxy was discovered chained inside a dirt pen in rural Florida. The enclosure was filled with ankle-deep waste, leaving her with little room to move and no clean place to rest. Her condition was just one part of a much larger animal cruelty case that rescuers described as one of the worst they had ever encountered. More than 80 animals were found living in similarly horrific conditions.
When law enforcement responded to the property, the owner was arrested, and the animals were signed over to Alaqua Animal Refuge, giving Foxy and the others a chance at a new beginning.
For Foxy, the rescue couldn’t have come at a more critical time.
She was only days away from giving birth.
Instead of welcoming her puppies into a dirty enclosure, rescuers immediately transported her to the animal refuge, where she received the care she had likely never experienced before.
The frightened dog was given a thorough medical examination, treated for fleas, groomed, and provided with proper nutrition. Most importantly, she was moved into a quiet maternity suite where she could finally rest in a clean, comfortable environment.
The rescue team monitored her around the clock, making sure she had everything she needed before labor began.
Then something remarkable happened.
Just a few days after arriving at the shelter, Foxy gave birth to eight healthy puppies.

Once the puppies are fully weaned and receive all of their veterinary care, both they and Foxy will be ready to begin the next chapter of their lives through adoption.
