For many rescue dogs, finding safety is only the first step toward healing.
The emotional wounds left by abandonment and uncertainty can take much longer to mend than any physical injury.
That’s especially true for a young dog named Dolly, whose world was turned upside down after losing the only companions she’d ever known.
At just 10 months old, Dolly is waiting for a forever home at the Maui Humane Society. But unlike many shelter dogs who eagerly greet visitors, Dolly spends most of her time hiding in the one place where she still feels secure—her kennel.
Her heartbreaking story began months earlier when she and her two siblings were found together on the Hawaiian island of Molokai.
The three puppies had grown up relying on one another. At only eight months old when they were rescued, they had never known life apart.
Through every challenge they faced, they had each other.
Then everything changed.
One by one, Dolly’s siblings found loving forever homes.
While it was wonderful news for them, it left Dolly behind to face an unfamiliar world completely alone.
For the shy young dog, the separation was devastating.
Without her siblings by her side, Dolly became overwhelmed with fear. The confidence she once had disappeared, and she retreated to the only place that still made her feel protected—her kennel.
Today, it’s her safe haven.

Whenever volunteers try to take Dolly outside, she desperately wants to return to the comfort of her enclosure. According to the shelter, she’s become such a flight risk that she’ll even climb fences in an attempt to get back inside.
It’s not because she dislikes people.
It’s because she’s frightened.
Shelter staff have also seen how deeply her anxiety affects potential adoption opportunities.
During one meet-and-greet with a prospective foster family, Dolly was so overwhelmed that she spent the entire visit hiding quietly in the corner of the yard. Even after the visitors had gone home, she refused to go near the chairs where they had been sitting.
Moments like those reveal just how much emotional healing she still needs.
To help her cope with the stress, Dolly is currently receiving anti-anxiety medication while the shelter team works patiently to rebuild her confidence.
Thankfully, they’ve also discovered something that brings her comfort.
Other dogs.
Dolly now shares a kennel with her canine friend, Lars, and having another dog nearby has helped her feel less alone. She clearly finds reassurance in canine companionship, and staff say she relaxes much more when she’s around other dogs she trusts.
Even more encouraging is what happens when Dolly finally feels safe.
The frightened dog who hides in her kennel transforms into a completely different pup.
She loves to snuggle.
She happily gives kisses.
She enjoys playing with toys and soaking up affection from the people she’s learned to trust.
Those glimpses of her true personality remind everyone at the shelter that beneath the fear is a sweet, loving dog simply waiting for someone willing to be patient.
Dolly doesn’t need a perfect home.
She needs an understanding one.
Someone who will allow her to adjust at her own pace, celebrate the smallest victories, and never expect her to overcome her fears overnight.
Healing from trauma isn’t a straight path, and every dog moves forward in their own time.
The staff caring for Dolly haven’t given up on her, and they hope her future family won’t either.
With patience, consistency, and plenty of love, they believe the nervous puppy who once depended on her siblings can learn to trust again.
Until then, Dolly continues to wait.
She may not be the first dog to run up and greet visitors, but those who take the time to look beyond her fear will find a gentle, affectionate companion with so much love left to give.
All she needs is someone willing to show her that she’ll never have to face the world alone again.
