What started as a routine morning check along an Ohio highway suddenly became something Trooper John Kronander probably never expected.

Near Interstate 71 in Medina County, Kronander came across a metal crate sitting by the roadside.

Inside was a puppy.

The young gray-and-white pit bull had been left completely alone, with no food, no water, and no person anywhere nearby.

It was around 8 a.m. on August 23, and summer temperatures only made the situation more concerning.

Whoever had left the puppy there had placed him dangerously close to a busy interstate, where traffic, heat, dehydration, and countless other hazards could have quickly turned the abandonment into a tragedy.

Fortunately, Kronander spotted him.

A Routine Check Turns Into a Rescue

Kronander had been conducting a routine rest-area check when he noticed the abandoned dog.

His body camera captured what happened next.

Rather than frightening the puppy by rushing toward him, Kronander approached gently and began reassuring him.

The dog appeared surprisingly friendly despite everything he had been through.

Once Kronander opened the crate and freed him, the frightened roadside discovery quickly turned into something much sweeter.

The puppy wanted to play.

Kronander grabbed a plastic bottle and used it as an improvised toy. The pup pawed at the bottle, wagged his tail, and began interacting with the trooper as though he’d just discovered a new friend.

The puppy was eventually taken to the Medina County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Meanwhile, the Ohio State Highway Patrol praised Kronander for responding with both quick action and compassion.

Sgt. Jeremy Kindler later suggested that Kronander’s instincts as a father seemed to come through during the rescue.

Watching the footage, it’s easy to see why.

Instead of treating the puppy like another problem to handle during his shift, Kronander spoke gently to him, played with him, and made sure he felt comfortable before moving him.

Although the puppy was finally safe, one major question remained:

The Medina County SPCA began asking the public for information that could help explain how the young dog ended up abandoned inside a crate beside the interstate.

The organization emphasized just how dangerous the situation had been.

Leaving a helpless puppy confined near a busy highway exposed him to tremendous risk. Without Kronander’s discovery, there is no telling how long the dog might have remained there—or what could have happened as temperatures climbed.

Authorities hoped that someone might recognize the puppy or remember seeing something suspicious around the area.

Even a seemingly small detail could potentially help investigators determine who abandoned him.

For the puppy, August 23 could have ended very differently.

He had no way to open the crate.
